Nature Morte presents “Flower Sutra”, a new body of work by one of India’s most respected modern masters, Manu Parekh, opening on Thursday, February 27, from 6 to 9 PM, and continuing through Sunday, March 30, at the gallery’s main space in The Dhan Mill, New Delhi.
Renowned for his vivid compositions and emotional intensity, Parekh continues to explore the dualities that have shaped his career — order and chaos, stillness and movement, creation and decay. This exhibition brings together recent works on canvas and paper, revealing a painter whose spirit remains as restless and inspired as ever.
The Pulse of Faith and Form
In Flower Sutra, Parekh channels energy through paint, transforming brushstrokes into living gestures. His technique — where thick impasto meets translucent washes and jagged lines slice through fluid color — creates a dynamic visual rhythm. Each painting vibrates with tension, balance, and release, embodying the flux of existence rather than seeking to control it.
Flowers, a recurring motif in Parekh’s art, become metaphors for faith, continuity, and transformation. As the artist himself reflects:
“Where there is faith, there will be the presence of flowers. Life, birth, marriage, and death — flowers will be there.”
Drawing from diverse spiritual traditions and experiences — from the Vatican to Ajmer, Nizamuddin Auliya’s dargah, gurudwaras, and Banaras — Parekh finds in flowers a universal symbol connecting belief, beauty, and impermanence.
About Manu Parekh
Born in 1939 in Ahmedabad, Parekh studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay (1962) and has since built a career defined by passion and experimentation. A Padma Shri awardee, he is often described as a “physical painter,” one whose creative process is guided as much by intuition as by form.
His time in Kolkata during the 1970s profoundly shaped his artistic voice, inspiring his signature blend of figurative abstraction rooted in India’s vernacular traditions. Later, his experiences in Banaras reignited his creative energy, leading to the acclaimed series that continue to define his practice today.
