Nature Morte proudly announces the opening of its permanent gallery space in Mumbai, marking a significant expansion of its legacy in Indian contemporary art. Located on the third floor of Block A, Dhanraj Mahal, Apollo Bandar, Colaba, the new space looks out over the Bombay Yacht Club and the Taj Mahal Hotel, positioning the gallery in the heart of Mumbai’s cultural district.
The inaugural exhibition features celebrated artist Subodh Gupta with A small village, around the corner, up in the mountain, on view from January 19 to March 9, 2024. This is Gupta’s seventh solo show with Nature Morte in India — a fitting beginning for this new location, echoing how the gallery first opened its Neeti Bagh space in New Delhi with one of his shows.
A Dialogue Between Objects and Memory
In this new exhibition, Gupta continues his exploration of everyday materials and social memory, creating sculptures, paintings, and wall reliefs that transform familiar domestic objects into symbols of community, time, and shared experience. Using utensils and vessels found across Indian households, Gupta investigates themes of identity, hierarchy, and human connection.
His titles and compositions reference the theatre of life and the mysteries of travel, blending the ordinary and the profound. Gupta’s works have been showcased globally at leading institutions such as the Monnaie de Paris, Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art (Washington DC), National Gallery of Victoria (Australia), Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt), and Hauser & Wirth (London and New York) among many others.
